Contra Bet Roulette Strategy
Contra Bet is a reverse D’Alembert-style rule: add one unit after a win and subtract one after a loss.
A one-unit floor makes the rule executable when repeated losses would otherwise reduce the next stake to zerowheelZeroThe single green pocket that no even-money, dozen or column bet covers; the source of the house edge. Also: single zero, 0.Read full →. It does not change the negative European expectation.

This is a reverse, or positive, D’Alembert variant. Because repeated losses can otherwise require a zero or negative wager, the example uses a one-unitmoneyUnitThe base stake a system or a player works in. Declared progression table
Start at 1 unit and never allow the stake below 1. The floor supplies the boundary required to continue the sequence after repeated losses.
Worked example
Bet 1 unit on blackbetBlackEven-money bet on the 18 black numbers. French: noir.Read full →. A win raises the next bet to 2; a second win raises it to 3. If the 3-unit bet loses, the next is 2. A further loss returns it to 1. The player has won 1 + 2 − 3 − 2 = −2 over those four completed bets despite the earlier wins, illustrating why a stake pattern is not a recovery proof.
Cost and risk
Increasing after wins makes later losses larger, while losses also tend to shrink the stake toward the floor. That changes volatility and the timing of exposure, not the even-money European edge of 1/37 per unit. An increment expressed as a percentage of bankroll can cap an opening stake, but it cannot make a negative wager positive. A finite floor and table rules should be specified before relying on any progressionstrategyProgressionAny rule that changes the stake based on previous results. Negative progressions raise it after losses, positive after wins.Read full → description.
Questions
Its direction is the reverse D’Alembert direction: stakes rise after wins and fall after losses.
Without a floor, subtracting after losses eventually asks for zero or a negative wager. The one-unit floor prevents that impossible instruction.
