Responsible Gambling
Roulette is a game of chance with a built-in cost. Here is how to keep that cost a choice.

Expected loss is 2.70% of everything you wager, every time. Decide a budget you can afford to lose before you play, treat the loss as the price of the entertainment, and stop when the budget is gone, whether you are up or down.
Practical rules
Set a deposit or session limit where the operator offers one. Never chase losses: the next spin does not know about the last one. Do not play with money needed for anything else, and do not borrow to play. Take breaks; pace is the biggest lever on expected lossmathExpected lossExpected value times total amount wagered; the average amount lost over a session or a period.Read full → per hour.
Warning signs
Playing longer or with more than intended, hiding play from others, thinking a system is “due” to work, or feeling that stopping is not a choice. Any of these is a reason to pause and talk to someone.
The short screen
Two questions, validated in clinical use: have you ever had to lie to people important to you about how much you gamble? Have you ever felt the need to bet more and more money? A yes to either is the threshold for a longer conversation. The nine-question Problem Gambling Severity Index is the standard research tool and is online, free, at most national help sites.
What dealers see

Why roulette in particular
Fast rounds, near misses on every spin (the ballequipmentBallThe small ball launched along the track against the rotor. The Why Roulette Is Addictive page has the mechanisms and the research. None of them is a character flaw; all of them are design, and knowing that helps.
Three things to do
One: set a deposit limit now, at every operator you use, lower than you think you need. Two: register with your national self-exclusion scheme if you cannot keep to it; the Responsible Gambling Tools page lists them. Three: call the help line in your country, once, to hear what is available. All three are free, confidential and reversible except the one that is designed not to be.
Where to get help
Free, confidential services by country are listed below. Self-exclusion schemes such as GAMSTOP (UK), Spelpaus (SE) or OASIS (DE) block access to licensed operators for a period you choose.
