Myth: Software Can Predict Roulette

“This app reads the wheel and tells you where the ball will land.” It cannot, and at a casino table the only kind that could is a crime.

Short answer

Apps and programs that study past numbers to pick the next one cannot work: the wheel has no memory, so the history holds no information about the next spin. Devices that time the ball and the rotor are a different thing and can work in theory, which is why Nevada made them a felony in 1985 and why tables close betting as the ball slows. An RNG game gives a timing device nothing to measure.

The claim

Search an app store for roulette and you will find predictors, trackers, “AI calculators” and bots. Most ask for the last few results and then light up the numbers to bet next. Paid versions promise a system that has been tested, a fixed win rate, or a losing streak that never runs past a few spins.

Why the history cannot predict a spin

A licensed wheel, physical or electronic, produces each result independently of the ones before it. The last 20 or 200 numbers say nothing about the next one, so any rule that turns a history into a bet is just a way of choosing numbers, and every choice costs 2.70% however the app made it. Programs that colour numbers hot and cold are drawing the gambler’s fallacy, or its mirror image, on screen. The one honest use of a long record is testing a physical wheel for bias, which takes thousands of spins and a statistical test, not a forecast.

The bets were chosen by a rule applied to past results. On a fair wheel the rule cannot matter, so these are ordinary flat-betting sessions.

The kind of prediction that can work

Physics is different. The ballequipmentBallThe small ball launched along the track against the rotor. Edward Thorp and Claude Shannon built a wearable computer that did this in 1961, the Eudaemons hid theirs under their clothes in the late 1970s and in their shoes in 1981, and later teams have been accused of using phones. None of them looked at past numbers; they measured the spin in progress. Casinos answered by closing bets earlier, and lawmakers answered too.

What the law says

Nevada has treated device-aided play as a felony since 1985, and its statute now names software as well: it is a crime to use, or to carry for use, anything designed to project the outcome of a casino game or to analyze the probabilities or the betting in it. The wording is broad enough to reach software that only crunches past results, whether or not it works. Elsewhere, device-aided play is usually treated as cheating under the gaming law; check the rules where you play.

Online: nothing to time

An RNG game has no ball and no rotor: the result is a number drawn from a certified generator, and the animation is played afterwards. A live-studio wheel is real, but studios close betting at or before the launch, so a measurement would arrive too late to use. What the apps offer for online play is the same history-based guessing.

How to recognise the pitch

A promised win rate, a “maximum losing streak”, a free trial that turns into a subscription, and screenshots of winning sessions. A wheel that could be predicted from its own history would be taken out of service, and anyone with a working predictor would be using it, not selling it.

Questions

Are roulette tracker apps legal?

At home they are just software that cannot predict. At a Nevada table, using or carrying for use any device built to analyze the game is a felony; check the law where you play.

Can AI predict roulette?

Not from past results: there is nothing in them to learn. A program with “AI” in its name faces the same wheel as any other.

Has anyone beaten roulette with a computer?

Yes, by timing the physical spin, not by reading the history. See Advantage Play.

Comic relief

The history knows nothing about the next spin.
