Myth: Online Roulette Is Rigged
“The online wheel knows what I bet.” It does not, and it would gain nothing by knowing.

Licensed RNG roulettevariantRNG rouletteRoulette with a software random number generator instead of a physical wheel. Same odds, no wheel bias possible.Read full → draws the result from a certified generator that is independent of bets; licensed live roulette films a physical wheel. Rigging is detectable, illegal and unnecessary: the house already wins 2.70% of turnovermoneyTurnoverThe total amount wagered over a session or period, counting re-bet winnings. The claim
Online roulette is programmed to lose when you bet big, to hit zerowheelZeroThe single green pocket that no even-money, dozen or column bet covers; the source of the house edge. Also: single zero, 0.Read full → when you have everything on redbetRedEven-money bet on the 18 red numbers. French: rouge.Read full →, or to give new players a hot start and then turn. Evidence offered: a bad session, a zero at the worst moment, a feeling.
How licensed RNG roulette works
The game server asks a random number generator for a value and maps it to a pocketequipmentPocketOne of the 37 numbered compartments on the rotor. Also: slot, cup.Read full →. The RNG does not receive the bets; in certified architectures it cannot. The generator is tested by an independent laboratory against statistical suites far more demanding than anything a player could run, over billions of draws, and the operator cannot alter it without breaking the certification seal. Regulators audit the logs. A rigged RNG would be a detectable, license-ending crime.
Why the house would not bother
The casino wins 2.70% of everything wagered without doing anything. Rigging would add risk (criminal prosecution, loss of license, a market that depends on trust) for a return it already has. Operators are not virtuous; they are rational, and the honest game is the profitable one.
Why it feels rigged
VariancemathVarianceA measure of how widely results spread around the expected value. High for straight up, low for even-money bets.Read full →. A 100-spin session at $10 on red has a standard deviationmathStandard deviationSquare root of variance; the typical distance of a result from the expected value.Read full → of $100 around an expected −$27. One session in twenty loses more than $200; one in a hundred loses more than $260. Zero hits 2.70% of the time, which over an evening is once or twice, and one of those will be when you have the most on the table because you often have a lot on the table. Online play is faster, so the bad stretches arrive in minutes rather than hours. The wheel is not reacting to you; you are seeing more of it.

The real risk
Unlicensed operators. Without a regulator there is no certification, no audit and no recourse. The myth that all online roulette is rigged does harm by treating a licensed, audited, logged game the same as an anonymous one. Check the license. Then check the pockets. Careless software is a real risk too, and a different thing from rigging. In 1999 security researchers showed that Planet Poker, an early online card room, seeded its shuffle from the computer’s clock in milliseconds since midnight, so only about 86 million decks could ever be dealt, out of a number of possible orders 68 digits long. A player who saw a few cards could work out the rest. The fault was carelessness, not malice, and it was fixed once reported. It is why certification now tests how a generator is seeded and how much it can produce, not only whether its output looks random.

Because you had the most on the table for a long time. Zero hits one spin in 37 regardless.
Comic relief

The honest game is the profitable one.
